In today’s highly competitive global economy, Taiwanese companies that limit themselves to the domestic market face restricted growth opportunities. For startups and SMEs alike, actively seeking international customers and partnerships is not only essential for revenues but for raising the funds they need to grow and to recruit the necessary global talent.

It is important for founders to show that they have the skills and sentiments to expand their company around the world.

International Chambers of Commerce: Strategic Platforms for Taiwanese Companies

The two largest chambers in Taiwan are the American AmCham and the European ECCT. AmCham has more than 580 corporate members while ECCT has 450. Both of these powerful organizations channel their member needs and suggestions via their annual white papers that they send to the Taiwanese government.

The French Chamber is the third largest international chamber of commerce in Taiwan with 180 members. The chamber took a decision many years ago to actively invite members from all countries to join and they changed their working language from French to English. They also invested in setting up two business centers which gives them a larger budget than most other national chambers.

Some of the other national chambers include:

The chambers are in most cases non-profit associations registered in Taipei which represent their member companies. For example, the Swedish Chamber of Commerce Taipei has 36 corporate members. Many of these members are Swedish companies doing business in Taiwan such as IKEA and Ericsson. Other members are Taiwanese companies founded by Swedish immigrants like Enspyre, VANA and Bonnsu or Taiwanese companies that do business in Sweden or with Swedish companies, like Kuang Tai or Eiger, and want to nurture their Swedish relationships.

International chambers of commerce are pivotal in promoting cross-border business collaborations and facilitating trade flows.

These chambers are also connected with their sister organizations in their “home” countries and around the world. For example, the French Chamber in Taiwan is connected with 125 other French Chambers in 95 countries.

Enspyre is currently a proud member of both the Swedish and the Canadian Chambers of Commerce. Enspyre’s CEO Elias Ek says,

The Swedish and Canadian Chambers give us access to networks in both Europe and North America which is great for our business.

Dr. Pojanath Bhatanacharoen (PhD), Executive Director of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce Taipei, pointed out the numerous benefits of joining the chamber, highlighting its role in fostering business connections and supporting the growth of its members:

Becoming a member of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce Taipei (SwedCham) opens the door to a thriving Taiwan-Sweden business community, uniting innovative multinational corporations, entrepreneurial small and medium-sized businesses, and forward-thinking professionals. SwedCham is dedicated to empowering businesses by providing a dynamic platform for business connections, strategic collaborations, and valuable market insights. As a member, you gain exclusive access to high-quality networking events, industry expertise, and a strong support system that helps you navigate and succeed in the Taiwanese market.

Engaging with these chambers and tapping into their services, networks and government connections can be a powerful tool for your company’s international expansion.

1. Expanding B2B Operations: Effective Cross-Border Cooperation and Networking

For Taiwanese B2B startups and companies, establishing extensive business networks is crucial for internationalization.

Many Taiwanese founders and sales people worry that their abilities to speak foreign languages will limit their company’s global growth potential. The key to learning is always practice, so while waiting to seek out these opportunities until you are standing in front of a customer or investor in a foreign country? The chambers organize many events every year that you can attend. Some of these events are more formal like luncheons with lectures while others are very informal networking events.

Participating in international chamber events helps companies recognize potential clients and partners from different regions and industries, while also building trust during business negotiations.

And if smalltalk or making sales pitches in a foreign language is making you nervous, would it not make sense to start talking to people who know and understand Taiwan and understand how it is to be a foreigner?

2. Resource Integration and Market Intelligence: Key to Success in International Markets

International chambers of commerce offer not only partnership opportunities but also serve as vital resource hubs for Taiwanese companies expanding into international markets. The market research data, policy analyses, industry trend reports, and professional advisory teams provided by these chambers offer substantial decision-making support for Taiwanese companies entering new markets.

For example, the European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan (ECCT) provides market intelligence, business matchmaking, and advocacy services to help European companies succeed in Taiwan (source).  These resources help Taiwanese B2B companies reduce uncertainty and risk in entering international markets, thereby increasing their chances of success.

An example from the other way – the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APFC) and the Canadian Trade Office organized a delegation of 19 Canadian startups to Taiwan. They hired Enspyre to set up meetings with Taiwanese customers and partners resulting in some deals concluded on-site, starting these Canadian startups’ presence in Taiwan.

3. Regulatory and Financial Support: Managing Risks in International Markets

When entering international markets, Taiwanese B2B companies often face multiple challenges, particularly in legal compliance and financial planning.

Due to the unique political situation of Taiwan, few countries have an embassy here, but instead the countries are represented by their trade offices, semi-governmental organizations that promote trade between the two countries and also deal with a varying number of consular and political affairs.

The chambers of commerce are often working closely with the trade offices and embassies that represent their “home countries”. This means that joining and being engaged in a chamber can help build connections with and knowledge about the governments in the countries you plan to expand to. Since most governments offer subsidies and other support for foreign companies that decide to invest in their countries, these insights can be worth a lot of time and money.

Invitation to the Upcoming All-Chambers Taipei Connect Event

As an ambitious startup founder, you probably want to expand all over the world so which chamber should you join? If you join one chamber, do you then choose to not engage with the members in the other chambers?

Luckily, the chambers are cooperating and a few times a year co-organizing an All-Chambers networking event. So while you perhaps choose to join only one chamber, these all-chamber events are a perfect chance to meet people from all over the world.

The next All Chambers Taipei Connect Event is taking place on April 24th 2025 at the Mandarin Oriental Taipei and is organized by the Swedish Chamber of Commerce, with Enspyre, Taiwan’s leading B2B Lead Generation company, as the official main sponsor.
